Indonesia to announce a new capital city

Indonesia’s President Jokowi is due to announce the country’s new capital city in the next two weeks or so. The move, which was first mooted in April, took many by surprise. But the reasons given for a new capital city are valid. Experts are saying that Jakarta is sinking given the rapid depletion of the city’s underground water. Congestion, uncontrolled urban sprawl and geological concerns are some of the other reasons for the government to decide on a new administrative capital. The new Indonesian capital is said to be in Kalimantan, in the island of Borneo. Government officials are tight-lipped on the actual location of the new capital, though experts think that there is a high possibility that President Jokowi will pick East Kalimantan as the country’s new administrative centre.
